Israeli forces kill a Palestinian man during a “shooting attack”
A Palestinian police officer, who was reportedly identified, was shot during an attack on an Israeli checkpoint in the occupied West Bank. Furthermore, the attack occurred despite the heightened security measures in the region. This incident serves as a reminder of the tension between the two sides and the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Israeli forces have tragically killed a Palestinian man, Hamdi Abu Dayyeh, aged 40, in the southern occupied West Bank. The fatal incident took place on Tuesday in Halhul, a town near the city of Hebron, and was confirmed by the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
Consequently, this has escalated the already tense relations between Palestinians and the Israeli occupying forces.
Palestinian media outlets reported that Abu Dayyeh, a police officer with the Palestinian Authority, was shot dead while carrying out a shooting attack against Israeli forces stationed at a checkpoint in the area.
Minutes before the incident, Israeli authorities had received reports of a shooting on a bus of settlers in the Hebron area, but no injuries were reported. The Israeli army shared an image of the sub-machine gun it said Abu Dayyeh had used and said he had been suspected of carrying out two shooting attacks in the past 48 hours. Despite this, no injuries were reported on the Israeli side.
Witnesses said the Israeli military prevented ambulances from approaching Abu Dayyeh as he lay on the ground. Abu Dayyeh is the 15th Palestinian to be killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank since the start of 2023, including four minors. Unfortunately, the Israeli army regularly carries out raids, arrests and killings of Palestinians.
Over the past year, Israel has significantly increased its operations in Palestinian villages, cities, and refugee camps, resulting in near-daily raids and killings. The Israeli government claims the operations are intended to dismantle armed resistance groups in the northern West Bank.
Unfortunately, civilians often face the brunt of the operations, with Israeli forces killing those confronting them during raids, uninvolved bystanders, and Palestinian fighters in targeted assassinations and exchanges of gunfire.
According to the United Nations, 2022 was the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank since 2006, with Israeli forces killing 224 people, including 171 in the West Bank, 30 children and teenagers, and 49 in the Gaza Strip. Furthermore, at least 9,000 Palestinians were injured during the same period. Consequently, the situation remains critical and calls for immediate action.
